Owen "Smokie" Johnson
"Smokie" is only the fourth musical director in the Band's history, serving in that capacity since 1972. Johnson, who holds a B.A. in music from a Eastern college, played professionally in New York City before coming to Albany in 1972 to join the Albany Police Department. Under Johnson's direction, the Band entered national American Legion band competitions in New Orleans, Boston, and Honolulu. He formerly directed the Albany Police Band and the Christian Brothers Academy Band. Classically-trained bass trombonist, Johnson directs the Band in concert, and doubles on trombone and Sousaphone on parade.
As business manager and principal trombonist, Dan is maintaining a Hannon family tradition, following in his father's footsteps. When Dan joined the band in 1957 his function was to pull the enormous bass drum on parade. Eventually he graduated to snare drum and later to trombone. In his role as business manager he is responsible for arranging performances. He also leads the Band on parade.
